Partner Profile: Ian Highton

Ian began his career in 1984 working for NatWest where he remained for 13 years. Having progressed through the traditional Banking Roles, he was appointed as a Personal Financial Adviser in 1992, Senior Adviser in 1993 and promoted to Financial Planning Manager in 1994. After a successful career advising High Net Worth & Corporate Clients in the Bank he set up Independent Options with Nigel in 1997.

When the firm became Directly Regulated by the Financial Services Authority at the end of 2006, a name change was necessary and therefore 'Independent Options' transitioned to 'Essential Financial Advisers' as the new name more accurately described the firms' focus.

Ian is currently one of the few Advisers who have attained the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning which was introduced in 2010, and is fully compliant with the Requirements of the Retail Distribution Review which will become the minimum requirement for advisers wishing to continue in the industry from 31st December 2012. Ian also holds the Certificate in Mortgage Advice & Practice.

Ian has also studied with the Kinder Institute of Life Planning and is currently working towards the 'Registered Life Planner' designation. Where appropriate these Financial Life Planning techniques are used with clients to identify and focus on their Lifetime Goals before formulating an appropriate strategy to achieve them.

Outside of work Ian enjoys spending quality time with his wife and son. In his spare time Ian enjoys Photography, Astronomy, Jet-Skiing, travelling, and various computer related interests. These include website design, graphic design, video and all forms of Social Media - so feel free to interact with Ian on Twitter, Facebook, GoogleBuzz, LinkedIn or FourSquare.
